Durum wheat breeding in Mediterranean environments - influence of climatic variables on quality traits

چکیده
Two durum wheat trials were carried out in Mediterranean conditions during 2010/2011 and 2011/2012 growing seasons at Plant Breeding Station-Elvas (Portugal). The experiments were conducted under rainfed conditions however, in 2012, due to extreme drought it was necessary to use artificial irrigation between booting and mid grain filling stage. Thirty durum wheat genotypes were studied and six quality parameters were evaluated: thousand kernel weight (TKW), test weight, vitreousness, protein content, SDS test and pigment content through Minolta CR 300 Colorimeter (L*a*b*) analysis. ANOVA showed that all sources of variation for four quality traits were highly significant (P < 0.001) for both years, except for SDS volume and index b* that were not significant during the two years of trials. Environmental effects showed that total water input during grain filling, appears to affect negatively grain quality by reducing test weight, TKW and semolina yield. Maximum temperatures during the same period reduced test weight, TKW, semolina yield and pigment content (L*), but increased protein content. A negative correlation was found between protein content and test weight and a positive correlation between test weight and semolina yield. Technological trait associated with pasta quality pigment index (b*) was significant different among the genotypes.

A total of 10 field experiments were carried out during the 1998 and 1999 growing seasons both in the north (Lleida) and the south (Granada and Jerez) of Spain. In Lleida and Granada, the experiments were conducted under both irrigated and rainfed conditions, while the Jerez trials were carried out only under rainfed conditions. Ten durum wheat genotypes were used in this study. Quality determi...

A major problem for durum wheat production in the Mediterranean region is yield fluctuation. This fluctuation is a result of year-to-year variation in precipitation and heat stress during grain growth, which is typical of the Mediterranean climate. Both yield stability and good quality are needed in adapted durum wheat ideotypes. Ten durum wheat cultivars differing in drought resistance were gr...

Genetic diversity of durum wheat landraces is a powerful tool for the introgression of new alleles of commercial interest in breeding programs. In a previous study, our team structured a collection of 172 durum wheat landraces from 21 Mediterranean countries in four genetic populations related to their geographical origin: east Mediterranean (17), east Balkan and Turkey (23), west Balkan and Eg...

Durum wheat (Triticum turgidum subsp. durum) is a key crop worldwide, and yet, its improvement and adaptation to emerging environmental threats is made difficult by the limited amount of allelic variation included in its elite pool. New allelic diversity may provide novel loci to international crop breeding through quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping in unexplored material. Here, we report th...
متن کاملDurum wheat quality in Mediterranean environments III. Stability and comparative methods in analysing G E interaction
Stability of grain quality characteristics is an interesting feature of today’s durum wheat breeding programmes, due to the high annual variation in both grain yield and quality, particularly in the Mediterranean area. Ten field trials were carried out during two seasons (1998 and 1999) in both the north (Lleida) and south (Granada and Jerez) of Spain. Ten durum wheat genotypes were used, inclu...
